Australian band The Steinbecks are another favorite with their first release in six years, the splendid ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ 7” (matinée 088) on classic black vinyl. Here’s what the indie press has to say about the single:

“At Arkaroo Rock gradually permeates your brain with its delicate charms and simple melodies… a quite beautiful song.” —Sounds XP

“Their new single harkens beautifully back to those old Sugargliders days, from the influence of Aztec Camera (think ‘We Could Send Letters’) in the guitar and vocals to the conspiratorial closeness of it all.” —Mess + Noise

“Moth-delicate, with gently cascading vocal lines and a glistening spun web of guitars … it operates at a dizzying level of exquisiteness.” —In Love With These Times, In Spite Of These Times

“At Arkaroo Rock is a gentle, lilting, meandering song with dreamy, Chris Isaak guitars and bass line that waitresses will simply have to wiggle their bums to.” —Listen with Monger

“Green, lush introspective pop music with inch perfect guitar phrases and the usual love of nature that comes through on all Meadows brothers recordings.” —A Layer of Chips

“Fabulous guitar pop from Australia.” —Rockerilla

Finally, the bubblegum pink vinyl ‘Have You Seen Faith?’ 7” (matinée 087) from Scottish hitmakers Bubblegum Lemonade is flying off the shelves and here are a few of our favorite quotes from recent reviews:

“Have You Seen Faith? is a lilting, harmony-laden track, complete with Rickenbacker solo and infectious little chorus. Whatever the time of day and mood, there’s always time in your day for little pop gems like this.” —Backseat Mafia

“The sound, as ever, is pristine indiepop and the melodies are typically wonderful.” —The Sound of Confusion

“Have You Seen Faith has the Byrds jangle and adds a little of the Stone Roses more melancholy side to the equation. Bonus points for writing the answer to Heavenly‘s Cool Guitar Boy on the b-side.” —The Finest Kiss

“The hazy Byrds-like title track moves from gentle drawn out vocals to a super melodic guitar figure, while ‘Cool Guitar Girl’ transports the sweet C86 pop of Primal Scream’s superlative ‘Velocity Girl’ across the Atlantic and ‘Angry Birds’ hits a melodic sweetspot … a brief but brilliant record.” —Rave Child

“Have You Seen Faith is one of those magical moments in pop music.” —When You Motor Away

“Another trio of timeless songs.” —Sounds XP

New Azure Blue album now shipping!

CD63 sleeveThe brilliant new album ‘Beyond The Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt’ (matcd063) from acclaimed Swedish pop act Azure Blue is now available from the Matinée shop!

The celebrated solo project of Tobias Isaksson, Azure Blue captured the hearts of music lovers around the world with the debut album ‘Rule Of Thirds’ (matcd059) and promotional tour covering ten countries in the past two years. The album received astounding critical praise, winning a Swedish independent grammy—the Manifest award—for best pop album in 2012 and enjoying exposure on both Swedish national TV and Spanish national radio. Among the outstanding reviews for the album, The Line Of Best Fit (UK) called it “nostalgia fuelled pop harking back to the heyday of Factory Records,” while Blurt Magazine (USA) named it “the best electro-pop record in recent memory.” Azure Blue toured extensively on the back of the success of the debut, across Europe in 2012 and taking in a live North American debut at the New York City Popfest in June of this year.

‘Beyond The Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt’ builds on the tremendous success of the debut with highly personal and deeply romantic songwriting bathed in especially polished production. Lead single ‘The Road I Know’ has been described as “a cacophony of vintage synthesizers battling for attention over a bed of whiplash electronic drums, all toned down by Tobias Isaksson’s romantic, softly delivered vocals.” The song is incredibly melodic and majestic all at once and recalls the magnificence of the Pet Shop Boys or New Order at their very best. Among many album highlights, opening track ‘Time Is On Our Side’ showcases Tobias’ elegant, warm vocals set to ambitiously sweeping instrumentation, while ‘Willows and Pines’ displays a downbeat splendor of captivating electronica and ‘Sunset’ is a hypnotic and especially ebullient masterpiece that sparkles in all the right places. You can preview these tracks on the Soundcloud player below.

Legendary music magazine PopMatters premiered the new album today, writing “Azure Blue creates a melange of ’80s synthpop textures and ’90s shoegaze vocals mixed with that wall of sound perfected by pop music back in the ’60s … yet this music sounds utterly contemporary.” PopMatters is hosting a stream of the full album today as well so head their way if you’d like to hear more.

The official release date of the album is October 8 but you can get a copy RIGHT NOW exclusively from the Matinée shop. Enjoy!

Seabirds 7″ out now!

090 sleeve

The impressive debut single from new English band Seabirds is out today! Entitled ‘Real Tears’ (matinée 090), the two–track 7″ is available on transparent sea blue vinyl and digital formats and is the current top seller in the Matinée shop. Fresh off an appearance at this summer’s Indietracks Festival, the Nottingham five piece have delivered the perfect debut featuring superb melodies, multiple guitars, soaring male vocals, and great female harmonies.

Lead track ‘Real Tears’ is a catchy and absolutely irresistible song set in the North West of England. A story about the first time you see somebody cry, the song starts with a carefully strummed guitar and male vocals but layers in rhythm guitars, female backing vocals, and dynamic percussion before reaching its dramatic conclusion. Flipside ‘Oh Buoy!’ turns up the guitars for a song about the excitement of a new relationship, and showcases some ace 60s jangle, more female harmonies, and a pretty excellent guitar solo.

The single recalls contemporary Scottish legends Belle and Sebastian if they grew up in a tougher part of town or the American band Voxtrot sifted through an English pop filter. It’s a very promising start for a young band and an excellent addition to the Matinée discography!

The 7” is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on colored vinyl and comes with a free download code. If you purchase a copy from the Matinée shop you’ll get a free immediate download of the songs as well. You can preview both tracks on our Soundcloud player below. Enjoy!

The Steinbecks – At Arkaroo Rock 7″ out now!

088 sleeve

The new ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ 7” from legendary Australian band The Steinbecks is out now and a very welcome return it is! Their first release since the ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ album in 2007 and first 7” since classics recorded for Summershine Records and Drive In Records in the 1990s, the new single (matinée 088) draws inspiration from ancient cave paintings at Australian indigenous cultural site Arkaroo Rock.

The song links the layers of a landscape’s history with the layers of a relationship—a theme familiar to fans of the band through songs like ‘Geology’ (1994), ‘The Lighthouse Act’ (1998), and ‘Bye Bye Baby’ (2007). Musically, ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ is lush and lovely—an oasis in a dry land. Myriad Marresque guitars riff, chime and jangle over a rock solid rhythm, with percussive flourishes adding a flair that will warm the hearts of Style Council, Aztec Camera, and Belle & Sebastian fans. The single version of ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ is a 4-minute radio edit; a longer version will appear on the forthcoming Steinbecks album, ‘Kick to kick with The Steinbecks’ later this year.

The single is backed by two exclusive tracks. ‘All Desires Known’ is arguably Josh and Joel Meadows’ most fragile, stripped back recorded moment since ‘Yr Jacket’, the last song they recorded as The Sugargliders. In contrast ‘Cabin Fever’ is an energetic ode to earthy love, reminiscent of The Monochrome Set, Tenpole Tudor and The Brilliant Corners.

The 7” is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on classic black vinyl, and as always, if you purchase a copy from the Matinée shop you’ll get a free immediate download of the songs as well!

We have a limited number of copies of classic Steinbecks albums on Summershine and Microindie Records in the Matinée shop at the moment so do the right thing and catch up on their backstory before their new album arrives later this year. The recent ‘A Nest With A View’ compilation (matcd062) from pre-Steinbecks band The Sugargliders is an essential piece of the history too but we’ve been bigging that one up on these very pages for the past year so surely you’ve secured a copy already, oui?

You can preview all three tracks from the ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ 7” right now on the handy Soundcloud player below. Enjoy!

Math and Physics Club – Long Drag 7″

089 sleeve

Hey! The new ‘Long Drag’ 7” (matinée 089) from Seattle indie band Math and Physics Club is out today!

The lead single from the band’s forthcoming ‘Our Hearts Beat Out Loud’ LP, the 7” was recorded by Bob Schwenkler at Olympia’s fabled Dub Narcotic Studio and showcases two very different sides of the band.

‘Long Drag’ plays against type with a raw, groovy stomp that sets moody lyrics against a sassy, schoolyard beat, while the exclusive b-side ‘Across the Paper’ takes a more soft shoe approach, with ukulele, mandolin, and warm harmonies providing the backdrop for broken hearts.

The 7” is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on coke bottle green vinyl and comes with a free download code all inside a smart sleeve designed by artist Tae Won Yu. If you purchase a copy from the Matinée shop you’ll get a free immediate download of the songs as well.

You can preview both tracks right now on the Soundcloud player below. Enjoy!

Matinée welcomes Seabirds!

090 sleeve

Following hot on the heels of our Bubblegum Lemonade / Math and Physics Club / The Steinbecks 7” trifecta, we are thrilled to announce another exclusive new 7” from a brand new Matinée band! Seabirds are a five piece guitar pop band from Nottingham, England who make melodic pop songs with loud guitars. Think Belle and Sebastian if they grew up in a tougher part of town or those early classics from Voxtrot and you’re nearly there. The band was selected to play the Indietracks Festival this summer so you have a chance to catch them live this coming Sunday at 1:40 pm on the outdoor stage if you are heading that way.

The debut Seabirds single is called ‘Real Tears’ (matinée 090) and it will be out in September but we’re so excited about this we couldn’t keep it to ourselves any longer. The A-side is now featured on our Soundcloud and the player below so check it out so you can sing along on Sunday. There is another ace track on the B-side called ‘Oh Buoy’ but you’ll have to wait to hear that one. The 7” is being pressed on transparent sea blue vinyl in a limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies. Bubblegum Lemonade 7″ release day!

087 sleeve

The new 7” from Scottish hitmakers Bubblegum Lemonade is out today! Entitled ‘Have You Seen Faith?’ (matinée 087), the three–track single is a certified summer smash on limited pink vinyl and digital formats and the current top seller in the Matinée shop.

The long-awaited follow-up to the 2010 ‘Sophomore Release’ album (matcd057), ‘Have You Seen Faith?’ is a secular hymn to missed opportunities with jangling, strumming riffs, great sixties harmonies, and a memorable chorus. The song is a preview of the band’s third album ‘Some Like It Pop’ set for release this autumn and showcasing a newly expanded lineup with Chaz and Brian joining main man Laz on bass and lead guitar, respectively.

The first of two exclusive 7” b-sides, ‘Cool Guitar Girl’ is a six string encounter and the natural response to Heavenly’s classic ‘Cool Guitar Boy’ anthem, while ‘Angry Birds’ is an angular, surf-tinged song about addiction to a certain mobile phone computer game.

The 7” is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on bubblegum pink vinyl and comes with a free download code. If you purchase a copy from the Matinée shop you’ll also get a free immediate download of the songs so what are you waiting for?

The Steinbecks – At Arkaroo Rock 7″

088 sleeve

Our third new release is a very welcome return (and happy Matinée debut) for legendary Australian band The Steinbecks! Their first release since the ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ album in 2007 and first 7” since classics recorded for Summershine Records and Drive In Records in the 1990s, The Steinbecks’ new single ‘At Arkaroo Rock’ (matinée 088) draws inspiration from ancient cave paintings at Australian indigenous cultural site Arkaroo Rock. The song is lush and lovely, with Marresque guitars chiming and jangling over a rock solid rhythm and percussive flourishes adding a flair that will warm the hearts of Style Council, Aztec Camera, and Belle & Sebastian fans. The song is now featured on our Soundcloud and the player below if you fancy a listen.

The 7” is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on classic black vinyl.
